Rerouting a major Indonesian mining road to spare nature and reduce development costs

Abstract Road‐infrastructure projects are expanding rapidly worldwide while penetrating into previously undisturbed forests. In Sumatra, Indonesia, a planned 88‐km‐long mining road for transporting coal would imperil the Harapan Forest, island's largest surviving tract of lowland rainforest. Such roads often lead to increased forest encroachment and illegal logging, fires, poaching, mining. To evaluate potential impact proposed road, we first manually mapped all existing inside around Forest using remote‐sensing imagery. We then calculated expected increase in loss from three mining‐road routes metric based on travel‐time mapping. Finally, used least‐cost‐path analyses identify new that minimize disruption road‐construction costs. found density nearby is already 3–4 times higher than official data sources indicate. Based our analyses, each 3,000–4,300 ha additional human plus another 424 lost construction itself. propose result up 3,321 less with markedly lower costs any other route. recommend approaches such as ours, analysis, environmental financial major development projects.
